ABOUT ME
I've been working with animals professionally for over 20 years. In addition to training dogs in a number of settings, I worked with great apes for almost a decade and most recently I have spent the last 6 years working as a veterinary technician.
This variety of experience has led me to a unique outlook on animal training and welfare. I use a modern, positive approach to problem solving and behavior modification to help you and your dog enjoy your lives together.
I have been recently focusing on educating myself on the newest, most affective, and most humane training methods. I am now a Certified Family Dog Mediator and a member of the APDT. I just finished the Master Class on Aggression in Dogs and working toward becoming a Certified Dog Trainer through CCPDT.

Great Apes
I spent nine years caring for great apes in two different settings. I first met orangutans and bonobos in Davenport, Iowa where I am from. I worked for a cognitive research facility as an ape caretaker and a research assistant for voluntary non-invasive cognitive research. I learned a lot about the science of animal behavior and began training apes for husbandry behaviors. When two of the orangutans needed new homes, I followed them to a sanctuary in Florida called the Center for Great Apes. There I cared for orangutans and chimpanzees and among many other tasks, trained apes for more advanced husbandry tasks like voluntary blood draws, voluntary injection, and cardiac Dopler readings. I was fascinated with training and it quickly became one of my favorite activities with the apes that I worked with.
Vet Tech
For six years I have been working as a small animal veterinary technician. I started at a large hospital and now work for a mobile vet. Dealing with dogs in a vet setting has taught me so much about canine body language and invaluable skills in handling all kinds of dogs in all kinds of emotional states.

Available in the Burnsville, Bakersville, and Spruce Pine areas of North Carolina.
LESSON SUBSCRIPTIONS
Pay monthly for weekly or biweekly lessons. Allows for continuous progress with your dog. Includes any type of private lesson that would aid in your dog's training.
Type of lessons may include:
1) Joint lessons with me, you and the dog.
2) One-on-one training sessions with me and the dog.
3) Me handling your dog on a pack walk
4) Supervised socialization or introductions
5) Any other type of session that would help your dog make progress.

HAND-OFF PACKAGE
This series of 8 lessons is designed to jump start progress with your dog. It can be successful with anything from basic obedience to dogs struggling with reactivity on leash, and many other specific issues.

During the first lesson, I will work with you and the dog to better understand previous training and your goals, as well as spend time with the dog so they are comfortable with me. The next 5 lessons will be frequent and I will take the dog and work with them on my own in order to establish a solid foundation. This allows me to experiment with the dog and teach them a few basics you can then build on going forward. The last 2 lessons will be with you included so I can hand over these new skills and help you understand how to continue making progress in the future.
